- [Integration: mind the cultural gap](https://www.pan-arts.net/blog/integration-mind-the-cultural-gap/): Integrating into a new culture can be incredibly difficult for some refugees and asylum seekers coming to the UK.  If you are from an area which is largely monocultural and mono faith, then coming to big pluralistic cities like London must be very confusing. If you are from a small place where there is one set way of men and women behaving towards each other and you arrive to find a multiplicity of behaviours, relationships, dress codes etc, you are going to find it 'wrong'.

Sophia is one such woman and all of us at Pan are so proud of her and how far she has come. Not only has she lived through huge hardships, but she has overcome abuse and prejudice to qualify as a psychotherapy counsellor, with a Level 4 Diploma in Integrated Psychotherapy.   In addition to this she also has a Level 3 Diploma in Person Centred Counselling from Lambeth College.

Politicians and media have spread scare stories with voices much louder than those who want to make “Refugees Welcome”.

Whether it is a sophisticated, orchestrated modern musical or storytelling across a campfire, the act of participation or of watching and listening is one that enthralls and calls to most humans.  At its simplest, it is entertainment, an escape from reality for a while.  A more contemplative experience may be one that connects and engages individuals, teaches life lessons and allows for emotional release, among other things.

The oasis of leafy greenery, seeped in community spirit, was filled with laughter, joy, and music. Colourful cups, tiny umbrellas to garnish your chosen drink and a generous spread kept our tummies full, culminating in the gooiest of brownies.

- [Helping Youth in Viet Nam discover a voice](https://www.pan-arts.net/blog/helping-youth-in-viet-nam-discover-a-voice/): Helping young people find their voices is what Pan does and we are very good at it (even if we say so ourselves!).  In the UK, most of the time, we do this through creativity and theatre arts workshops for refugees, asylum seekers and others allowing them to rediscover their voices, which they may have lost through their personal circumstances and  traumatic experiences.  Every now and again we get the opportunity to work with young people in different parts of the world, often where the young have traditionally not had a voice, leading them to use their imagination and creativity to express themselves.  
- [Bridging the gap between them and us](https://www.pan-arts.net/blog/bridging-the-gap-between-them-and-us/): Towards the end of last year we were delighted to receive funding from the Mayor’s Office Shared Endeavour Fund to run a ‘Building Bridges’ project at Newham College. The pilot visits and planning were undertaken before the year end and the programme started in January this year.  This programme is based on one that was originally undertaken in 2020-21 at the Bosco Centre in Bermondsey where two groups of students who did not normally interact much were challenged to find common ground with each other.   The aim of the project was to integrate the different groups of young people, breaking down the barriers between ‘them’ and ‘us’.

The games we play with them allow them to work together, trust and own their ideas and start to reflect on subjects while having fun. This is one of the great advantages of playfulness; you don’t have to think about creating, the creativity emerges in the games.
- [A Festive Concert](https://www.pan-arts.net/blog/a-festive-concert/): The Amies Choir Workshare concert in the first week of December was a lovely way to kick off the Christmas season.  It was particularly memorable since both the  Amies Freedom Choir and the Amies Alumnae Choir joined forces to raise their beautiful voices for half an hour of glorious music.  
- [Singing at the British Library](https://www.pan-arts.net/blog/singing-at-the-british-library/): The Amies Freedom Choir, funded by the charity Lifelines International, was recently invited to perform at the British Library by the donor charity.  The event was a celebration of all the projects funded by Lifelines International and was attended by  all the beneficiary charities that receive funding from Lifelines.  It provided a wonderful opportunity for the Choir to sing.

- [J’s Story](https://www.pan-arts.net/our-impact/case-studies/js-story/): J shuffled into the room about halfway through the year. His body showed signs of stiffness, unable to move easily, even to raise his arms or turn his neck. His face seemed similarly ‘frozen’, his eyes un-engaged. He had almost no language to communicate. We got “Afghanistan” and “No English” from him. J’s progress was by micro-stages. There was no great leap forward. We noticed the tiny changes, each one impressive in itself. J did not progress to full confidence, full communication or easy creativity but the progress from his initial state was remarkable. The regular warm ups were difficult for him. It was therefore amazing that he finally managed to lift his arms above shoulder level. His neck turned slightly. He walked (albeit carefully) rather than shuffling. He smiled. This took months but went from sheepish to confident smiling. A joy to see. He would watch others and copy them rather than think of his own movement or idea. Until we talked of favourite leisure activities. He loved walking in the park and was able to show how he walked, what he saw and the pleasure in it. It was his. From uncertain drawing and painting he finished with an extremely carefully designed and executed painting of hills, trees and a house. This, he told us, was his “dream”. We know J still has a way to go but we are confident he has made great strides along that path. Sometimes it is the small steps and the slow progress which is the success.
- [A’s Story](https://www.pan-arts.net/our-impact/case-studies/as-story/): ‘A’ started the year with a lot less English than the rest of the group. He also did not share another language with any other participant. This initially led to him appearing quite shy in the sessions, as he would not speak up or draw attention to himself. He would, however, fully participate with the sessions and threw himself into each activity. By the second term he seemed to push past a barrier with English and was far more confident speaking in front of the group. This meant that we really got to see ‘A’ shine. He had a firm friendship group where they would all collaborate on scenes together. From this term he was always happy to perform in front of the group and wider audiences. He was also one of the only participants, when asked to bring in something important to them, diverged from the group and shared something other than a piece of music. He brought in a leaflet for an activity centre that he had been to many times where he could climb and play music. It was lovely that this is something he wanted to share with the group and got the opportunity to do so. By the final performance, he happily stood on stage by himself to deliver a speech. It’s been lovely to see his confidence grow.

Since the introduction of the pilot project she stood out as one young person that showed great enthusiasm, attendance and positive energy in the space.

He was finding life difficult: he had been excluded from mainstream education and was a pupil in an alternative provision academy.
